A Wedding Framed by Vineyards and Red Wine Tones

Quinta da Lapa, Central Portugal

When Erna and Aurimas first contacted me, their idea was beautifully simple. They were travelling to Portugal for a holiday and thought it would be fun to include their civil wedding along the way — returning home to Lithuania already married.

But simple ideas have a way of growing. Soon, a few of their closest friends decided to join the journey, turning a spontaneous plan into a small destination celebration with just ten guests in total.

Instead of a city ceremony, I suggested moving the celebration somewhere that would feel unmistakably Portuguese — a wine estate surrounded by vineyards. Their wedding unfolded at Quinta da Lapa, where the group stayed together for two nights, beginning the festivities with a private wine experience the day before.

The ceremony took place in the estate courtyard, framed by the striking dark red doors and windows of the historic building. As the bride entered through them accompanied by her sister, the groom waited surrounded by their closest friends, visibly moved. Guests were seated in an intimate circle, creating a ceremony that felt less like a formal event and more like a shared moment among the people who mattered most.

Later in the afternoon, the couple slipped away for portraits at the romantic ruins of the eighteenth-century Palácio de Pina Manique. Once a grand noble residence, its weathered arches and quiet courtyards now carry a sense of timelessness, creating an atmospheric setting for photographs that felt almost cinematic.

As evening fell, everyone gathered again at the estate for dinner overlooking the vineyards. The design of the table quietly echoed the landscape and the spirit of the place. Inspired by the deep tones of Portuguese red wine, rich burgundy linen set the stage for modern floral arrangements in crimson, pink, and violet hues. Even the smallest details carried meaning. Handwritten place cards were created on pieces of Portuguese stone traditionally used in some vineyards as supports for the vines, while small offcuts from the morning pruning in the surrounding fields were woven into the floral arrangements. As the wedding took place in March, the delicate branches were already showing the first tiny leaves of spring — a subtle tribute to the land and the season surrounding the celebration.

What began as a spontaneous idea during a holiday became something far richer: an intimate destination wedding where travel, friendship, and a sense of place came together naturally in the Portuguese countryside.

Moments like these are the reason I love guiding couples from around the world in creating celebrations in Portugal that feel both deeply personal and effortlessly refined.
